In medical schools of North America, students are required to accomplish two complementary but distinct steps before becoming fully licenced physicians. The first step is the completion of the MD program, which gives students a general medical training and prepares them to residency. The second step is postdoctoral training (also known as residency). Residency is two-year long for Family Medicine and five to seven-year long for any of the 32 Speciality training programs.
In Quebec, the admissions in medicine is determined by the number of available spots which vary each year, as defined by the four schools in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and with various stakeholders (including the FMEQ). In 2010-2011, 815 students have started their medical training in Quebec.
The admissions’ process first selects candidates with a good academic record. Remaining candidates are subsequently retained according to personal characteristics defined as important by each school.
