Medical studies certainly represent a long, but so much passionate process. Be it for a student completing a College education, from another university or already working, the section medical studies brings useful information for anyone wishing to meet the challenge.

In Quebec, there are four universities offering a medical doctorate program, namely University of Montreal, Laval University, Sherbrooke University and McGill University The duration of studies vary between four to five years depending on the university chosen. For additional information on specifications regarding different programs being offered, consult their website by clicking on the above addresses.

Medical training also implies two complementary stages. The first being obtaining a doctorate in medicine (M.D) corresponding to a first cycle degree. This general training of a duration of four to five years is compulsory. The second stage is the post-doctorate studies which grants the right to practice with an orientation toward family medicine (duration 2 years) towards one of the 32 specialties offered (duration from 3 to 6 years) or in a career in research.

Admission in medicine is conditional to the number of places available, number that varies every year. In 2003-2004, 734 students, of which 666 Quebec residents, made their entry in the Quebec medical faculties. In 2004-2005, one may expect an increase in regular admissions (students from Quebec and Canada do not benefit from an inter-provincial agreement) just as the total number of admissions, while keeping nevertheless 43 places for students from New-Brunswick and 15 places for foreign students.

A first selection is done amongst the candidates based on the excellence of scholar results. Thereafter, other criterions, based on the personal characteristics of the student profile are added depending on the university.
