Each faculty offers a medical doctorate program emphasizing on personal philosophy. Below are brief descriptions:
Laval University : Students may choose to complete their preclinal studies in two or three years. They plan their optional classes consequently. Then, they complete their medical training through clerkship for a duration of two years. Therefore, they complete their studies in four or five years. Following this, they obtain the title of MD, but cannot practice until their residency is completed. However, students from Laval University have the opportunity to choose an international profile which enables them to complete a training program abroad during a summer while completing classes oriented towards their apprenticeship and belief. Teaching is mainly conducted through lectures, but also through some problem-based approach, workshops of small and large groups, through self-apprenticeship units, labs and training in hospitals.
McGill University : The program at McGill University has a duration of four years before obtaining the title of MD and apply for residency. The first, jointly with the dental medical students, essentially calls for basic science classes. The second, gives an introduction to medical practice through classes directly relating to medical realities. With regards to the third and fourth year, students learn through labs, workshops in small groups and magisterial classes. Classes are given entirely in English which does not keep a student from submitting exams or complete reports in French.
University of Montreal : The program at University of Montreal is completed in either four or five years. Students arriving from "Cegep' or that have no related degree to medical training must begin with a prep year comprising mainly of magisterial classes on basic sciences. Afterwards, students already having a medical training join the class for the first and second year pre-clinic. By means of apprenticeship through problem solving, each system is studied one by one. However, once a week, students visit hospitals in an effort to integrate a part of their knowledge and apply a clinical experience. Finally, to complete their MD diploma, students spend the following two years of clinic in training programs.
