Residency Application: now through CaRMS

The francophone universities joined CaRMS (Canadian Residency Matching Service) two years ago (McGill was already using CaRMS).

You can get more information about applying to a residency program, the programs themselves, the universities, etc. on the CaRMS website (available in French and English).

The procedure for residency admission is a crucial point in the progress of each medical student. It is therefore important to offer a smooth and fair process at all levels, while respecting students' rights.

At the end of the admission application period, the conference of vice-deans to post-doctorate studies of the four Quebec medical faculties meet representatives of the FMEQ to revise the process and identify points that can be improved in the existing system.

Therefore, during the past years, we have noted an improvement with regards to personal questions that were asked during the interview. Nevertheless, there are still a few leaks in the process as a whole and in the contents of the interview.

For example, members of a selection committee should not ask the student what the first choice of residency is or should they be aware of other applications in other programs except their own…

This is the reason why the FMEQ prepared a questionnaire containing certain key questions necessary to identify the lacks and problems of application for residency. In an effort to help future candidates, the Federation is requesting the cooperation of students that will be starting their residency program next July. They are invited to answer the questions and give an honest and precise outlook of their experience. 2004 is the first year that this questionnaire will be used. For additional information, comments or suggestions regarding its content, please do not hesitate to contact the Delegate to Pedagogical Affairs of the FMEQ!

Please note that different projects will be implemented shortly in order to demystify the process of application for residency. For example, there will be an article outlining the pros and cons of the admission system in Quebec in comparison to the CaRMS used in the rest of Canada and at McGill University.

The CARMS (Canadian Residency Matching Service) is a system that classifies the applications for senior external residency based on their choice.
The FMEQ will also supply you additional information regarding this service!
